Simple Ways to Politely & Effectively on Collaborative Boards

Do a Quick Board Review Before You Pin

Open the board you are planning to pin to right before you click pin it. What are the most recent pins? How will your pin fit in? Are you repinning a popular pin that has already been featured that day? You don’t have to scroll back forever to check on this but sometimes in the top 3 rows of a board I’ve seen a great pin that relates to my product that has already been pinned. Checking first means you can be sure your related pins are fresh and unique rather than repetitive and annoying.

Double Check Board Rules

Quickly review the rules for the board you are planning to pin to before you click the pin it button. Scan for any big no-no’s to avoid. Each board is different and will have a different ratio of paid to free pins expected as well as things like the size of pins allowed, product covers, number of total pins per pinner each day, etc. Finding a way that works for you to organize collaborative board rules makes this step way easier! I know this isn’t the most exciting tip but it’s an important one.

boringstudying

Start Your Own Boards to Gain Your Own Following

Start your own boards for each product or product line you create.  Fill these boards exclusively with non-paid pins that complement your product as well as a variety of highly repinnable pins featuring your own product. Filling these boards can be done in a few minutes a day and should be fun for you!

To find great related pins do a search on pinterest for related terms. Do a simple google image search as well. Only pin items from google image search if you are able to follow the link to the original blog post or website featuring the image. Then be sure to pin from that source instead of from the google image search result page. Otherwise your pin will lead your followers to a dead-end rather than to the inspiring source material.

Creating your own boards that are 95% not products is without a doubt the quickest way to gain followers.

How to Use Your New Boards to Promote Your Products on Collaborative Boards

Open a tab with your chosen product promo pin. Open another tab with your board full of related pins. Then open up tabs for each related pin you plan to use from your board. If you need more related pins do a quick search on pinterest and open tabs for each pin you plan to repin. The more related pins, the better!

anigif_enhanced-buzz-512-1378883603-14

Now open a tab with the collaborative board you plan to pin to (see the top of this post for more on this). Look at the pins you have open in tabs and think about where your product pin would best stand out. Think about size, color, placement on the board, etc. Check out my spring board below to see a product pin surrounded by related free pins.

Spring Board Example

You’re ready to pin! Pin from each tab in the order you have already planned. Close each tab after clicking pin it. Then go back to admire your well curated contribution to the board!

OMG!! I began reading this post because I love your Pinterest tips and, then, when I scrolled down, I saw my logo!!!
I’m so happy you think I do a good job pinning because you’re such a pro! Talk about the ultimate compliment!

As always, your tips are great!
Pinning onto collaborative boards should be like visiting someone’s home.
People should be respectful of the space the host is opening up for them.
At least, that’s what I try to do 🙂

I would love to join your new 2nd grade collab. board. I loved reading all your tips. I’ve never really wanted to join a board because it just all felt like an online TpT ad. After reading your other post and this post… I am all in. I agree with all that you shared and, to me, it just makes so much sense. Thanks, Laura V.

    Hi Diana,

I am lucky enough to be an art teacher in a school district which still supports the arts. However, too often, I hear of school districts who no longer support art classes, music, etc. So, one of my goals at TPT (my store is “Art with Jenny K”) is to provide some art activities for classroom teachers that are not too intimidating, that engage the students, and produce a result that everyone (teacher, students, parents, alike) all love and say “wow!”

Many of my art activities are geared around the holidays and seasons, and typically are for the elementary grades. So, consequently, I have followed your K, 1st, and 2nd boards, as well as all your holiday/occation boards. I would love the opportunity to pin some resources (blog articles, references, etc) and some of my TPT products to these boards.

Looking forward to the chance to collaborate and help keep art in the classroom!

    Jenny K

    Hi Diana!

I love your blog and your boards. I would love to be added to your boards. Here is my Pinterest information: http://www.pinterest.com/tdralus/. Thank you in advance!

The thing I love the most is that part of your proceeds go to St. Jude’s and The Trevor Project. I am going to look more into The Trevor Project. That sounds very important. I used to work as a Mental Health Tech with teens while I was going back to school to become a teacher. Sadly, I came across many children who felt they had no other option. Thankfully, many of those kids came to realize they did. Thank you for reminding me of how important this realization can be. Take care!

    • Diana says

Hi Trina! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. One of my favorite things about TPT is that it is giving me the chance to support causes that are close to my heart. Thanks again for commenting & joining the boards. Diana

I received the board invites! Thank you!!

Somehow, when I was accepting the second grade invite, my cursor selected “ignore” when I was moving over that toward the “accept”!! I was so annoyed, and couldn’t seem to go retrieve the invitation!!! Ugh! If you get a chance, could you send me the second grade invite again? If you don’t have time, though, that’s okay! I’m so sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you again!

Hello! I am LOVING being a part of these collaborative boards. I am wondering if there would be any considerations in decreasing the amount of surrounding pins to maybe around 3? Five is sometimes hard to find for each product – well, five that are good quality things you’d want to pin. Just a thought. Lots of boards only do 2 or 3.
Also, I am having trouble pinning things that AREN’T my product cover page. I hit the Pin button and all if offers me is the product cover. How do I get around that??
    Thanks!

I really like the rules of your boards! I left some a few years back because there was constant pinning and I couldn’t get to the other stuff I like to see on Pinterest. I never made a separate account from my personal (don’t want to lose the followers).

    Hi Diana,

I just love your boards! I have been using Pinterest for a while now for inspiration and I have finally, well almost, figured it out… I would love to be added to your boards “Best of Fourth Grade” and “Best of FREE Teacher Tips”. I have taught both 4th and 5th grade and will be returning to 4th again this fall. Thanks again!

  47. says

    Hi Diana,
I am relatively new to Pinterest (several months) and for me to understand how to pin politely I wanted to ask a couple of questions.

    1. If I am posting on my own boards do you automatically see what that is? Or, do I post again directly on your board for you to see it?

    2. 5 free pins of relative nature to our own paid pin (linked to TpT store) but no dollar signs in the pin, right?
I want to follow the board rules. Thanks!

    • Diana says

Hi Vanessa! I’m so sorry to be so late in getting back to you… the end of the school year had me pretty overwhelmed for awhile there! Anyone who follows your pinterest account will see anything that you pin to any boards. For a pin to specifically show up on my collaborative boards you do need to pin to one of those specific boards… let me know if that doesn’t make sense. And yes for your product pin you do not need to include the price in the pin. People will see that your link goes to TPT and will see the price when they click the link. Thanks again for joining! 🙂

    • Diana says

Thanks so much Jessica! I’m happy to add you to the other boards- happy pinning! 🙂

Hi! Great blog! I just subscribed to your newsletter. I am a teacher from Chicago. I have taught 1st and 2nd (mostly bilingual and Dual Language) and am now a K-1 reading specialist. I try to find time to make resources for TPT, but I’m still a bit of a novice. I would love to join your boards, “First Grade” and “Second Grade”

    Hello,

It is awesome when teachers support other teachers. I came across your Educational board and read your invite instructions. I would appreciate the opportunity to share creative and higher learning ideas and lessons on your board. The Dill Purple Geniuses is a educational and inspirational project that supports teachers, kids, and parents. We would love for you to share with your fellow teachers/pinners as well. dillpurplegeniuses.com is our website if you want to read a little more about us.

Hi Kati! Pinterest wouldn’t let me add you by using your user name so if you would like me to try again I can do that using the email address associated with your pinterest account. Just send me an email at dianaowens27 (at) gmail (dot) com & I will try to get those invites to you. Sorry about the confusion- pinterest has been very glitchy lately about getting people added to collaborative boards 🙁 Fingers crossed we’ll have you pinning soon! 🙂 Diana

Thank you for the quick reply! I think I know what the problem is. I gave you my personal info when in fact our pinterest account is set up under my store partner’s info. I will reenter with the correct name and hope that solves the problem! Thank you for answering here as she does not do the pinterest thing – I do!
